COMMENTARY: THE IRRATIONALITY
OF CLOSED-MINDED SKEPTICISM
It is now coming to
our 30th year researching the afterlife. When we first
started writing about the afterlife the debunkers were
over-confident and aggressive. They insisted that there
was no evidence for the afterlife and that every claim
about afterlife contact was fraudulent. But, for us
at least, these high energy skeptics seem to have vanished.
What we encounter more frequently is academics who acknowledge
that many sincere people have near-death experiences
or after-death contacts but insult the intelligence
of the experiencers by calling their experiences "hallucinations".
In regards to after-death contacts, they totally overlook
the fact that study after study has shown that:
1) Many people have after death contacts BEFORE they
know that the person contacting them has died;
2) In most cases the person receiving the contact is
relaxed, free from shock or stress, unlike people who
have real hallucinations;
3) Sometimes the deceased person shares important information
not known to any other living person (e.g. The
Chaffin Will case);
4) Sometimes the spirit visitor leaves objective evidence;
5) Many of the recorded cases have been seen by more
than one person. For example in a case investigated
by the Society for Psychical Research, nine people resident
in a house in Ramsbury, England saw a man who had died
ten months previously. He was always seen beside his
dying widow's bedside with his hand placed on her forehead
and was visible for up to half an hour at a time (Holzer
1965: 52-56).

NANCY RYNES NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE
As a scientist, science writer, and corporate trainer,
for over two decades Nancy Rynes was a scientific skeptic.
She remained an atheist until her life-changing bicycling
accident and near-death experience (NDE). She says that

body in "death" and stood there in the same
room wherein my friends had witnessed my transition,
what I needed in my ignorance was plain, simple and
unambiguous instruction upon what was to happen next.
That help was instantly forthcoming, but it did not
come in response to the prayers that were being said.
Indeed, by their very nature, it could not.
An old friend and colleague, Edwin by name, came to
my assistance and presented himself to me in that room.
He assured me that he did not come in answer to any
prayers that were being offered up. Indeed, he affirmed
that there was nothing in any of them that would bring
him, or cause him to be sent, to my aid. He came because
he was acquainted of my pending transition through the
perfect organisation which exists in the spirit world.

A TRIBUTE TO THE VOLUNTEERS
AND THEIR THERAPY DOGS Caleb
was in a terrible accident that took the life of his
mother, brother, and sister. His recovery was slow and
involved over a dozen surgeries and intensive physical
therapy. One of the things that helped him enormously
was regular sessions with a service dog, Colonel, brought
to the hospital by his handler Susan.
Caleb has made an amazing recovery and is attending
regular school now and achieving very good grades. He
writes: "I am doing fine now but there are still other
people that need your love and support. There are probably
people that you know in your own life right now that
could use a kind word, an e-mail of encouragement, or
