COMMENTARY:
AVOIDING DESPAIR ABOUT THE WORLD Often
we receive emails asking how we can keep from being
overwhelmed by all that is wrong in the world: the injustice,
corruption, greed, poverty and the violence against
people and animals. With the 24-hour global news cycle,
and now with social media, we are constantly bombarded
with disturbing stories and images.
I totally agree that there are terrible things happening
and that we should respond with love and do whatever
we can to comfort the afflicted. But we have to avoid
being overwhelmed with despair and sinking into depression
and 'compassion
fatigue'.
It's also helpful to remember that we are living in
the best and most peaceful times in human history (see
video at the bottom of this page) and that many wonderful
things are happening which the media ignores. As the
great spiritual teacher, Silver Birch said: “There
will be many big changes. There will be break-ups and
there will be many upheavals. There will be what you
think is darkness and difficulty. You will say, 'Things
are worse'. But, all the time, there is behind it all
a power which is making for the progress of the world.”
(Teachings of Silver Birch p.42).
And finally, we all need to remember the purpose of
life on earth. We return to earth with specific lessons
to learn according to our spiritual needs and with full
knowledge of the challenges we will face, knowing that
a life on earth is like a fraction of an eye-blink in
our eternal existence.

WHO WAS ALLAN KARDEC? Allan
Kardec is the pen name of the French educator, translator
and author Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail (1804-1868).
He received teachings about the purpose of life and
the afterlife from higher spirits who identified themselves
as "The
Spirit of Truth", in several seances during
the 1850s. He wrote five books that would become the
basis of the Spiritist Doctrine: The
Spirits’ Book, The

HOW TO DO AUTOMATIC WRITING A writing medium is able to go
into a trance and allow their hand to be taken over by
a spirit person, sometimes writing at a supernormal speed,
in languages unknown to the medium about subjects totally
outside their knowledge. This is called "automatic
writing" or "psychography". Sometimes the

After the death of their brother in 1967, Ida Cook and
Louise Cook began visiting different mediums in the
hope of gaining a communication. They began attending
séances with direct
voice medium Leslie Flint in 1969 and continued
for the next 10 years. They were able to get clear contact
from their brother, their mother, Mary, and other family
members speaking in their own voices. They also had
conversations with some of their wartime friends and
those from the worlds of opera and literature. It is
